What Should I Landscape Around My Pool?

A luxury backyard pool is more than just the pool itself. The landscaping surrounding your pool is just as important for providing a luxury experience. At Aqua Blue Pools, we never forget about landscaping. In fact, we offer landscaping services as part of our new pool builds.

Just like every pool, landscaping is a matter of personal preference. There are various different landscaping options, each with its own advantages, and it’s up to you to decide which you like best. In this article, we’ll discuss some of the most common considerations when it comes to landscaping so that you can identify the perfect options for you.

Trees and shrubs

The first thing that comes to most people’s minds when we mention landscaping is greenery. Trees, shrubs, plants, and grass often spring to mind to create a beautiful pool surround.

We strongly advise against planting grass around your pool. Doing so can cause damage to the pool, requires constant upkeep, and can cause constant littering of grass clippings in the water. Instead, we recommend focusing on trees, plants, and shrubs — and there are many great options.

Plants are a great way to add a luscious and vibrant feel to your pool, but you shouldn’t choose plants based solely on looks. Ideally, you’ll want to pick a plant that:

  • Doesn’t shed
  • Doesn’t have thorns
  • Doesn’t bear fruit
  • Is low maintenance
  • Doesn’t have invasive roots
  • Isn’t attractive to bees

Some great options for plants, trees, and shrubs include:

  • Palm Trees
  • Live Oaks
  • Aloe Vera
  • Octopus Agave
  • Red Justicia
  • Weeping Dalea

Privacy

Landscaping is more than just about making your pool look nice, it also provides a layer of privacy to stop nosy neighbors from taking a peek.

Privacy can be achieved by surrounding the pool with a privacy wall made of hedges or plants. These are tall trees, shrubs, or plants that complement your pool while also increasing privacy. Some ideas include:

  • Bamboo
  • Colorado Blue Spruce
  • Green Giant Arborvitae
  • Emerald Green Arborvitae
  • Norway Spruce

Patio/deck

A pool patio or pool decking transforms your pool from an area where you only go swimming into a full relaxation space. It creates a dedicated area to entertain guests and lounge around in the sun. Patios and decks are great for adding furniture, BBQs, and more, plus they’re great for kids parties or family gatherings.

Firepit

A late-night dip is best accompanied by a roasting fire. Firepits are great additions to your pool that add a touch of luxury and elegance to your setup. A fire pit is a great space to relax with your loved ones, stay warm in the chilled air, and roast some delicious marshmallows. Plus, fire acts as a stunning light source that only adds to the ambience.
