Perimeter overflow pool designs make a splash. The popularity of these types of modern pool designs has been on the rise and they are some of the most expensive and complicated pools to build. Constructing a perimeter-overflow pool is not for beginners — one mistake can prove costly. In addition to tremendous skill in developing clear and explicit plans, these designs require expertise in forming shells, configuring plumbing systems and shooting or pouring concrete. It’s a costly look, so if you miss the mark in either design or installation, your nightmares are only just beginning. Setting things straight after the fact can be supremely difficult without starting over again entirely. A deck-level perimeter overflow is often called “knife-edge” and “zero edge” because the slot where the water falls is almost invisible. It is also called “Lautner-edge” after Los Angeles architect John Lautner who first adopted the concept. We did our first perimeter overflow pool in 2000 and the project is located in Downtown Charleston’s historic district – but the pool you see in this picture is located on Sullivan’s Island. If you have a sizable budget for your swimming pool project and you’re after the wow factor that will give you a mystical look to your backyard space, then the perimeter overflow pool design could be for you.
