Memorial Day is this upcoming Monday, May 29th, marking the unofficial start of the summer vacation season and the unofficial start of pool season.  Many people go on vacation for this Holiday, but when you have a pool, vacation living is just a step outside.

Here are a few things to remember while enjoying and observing the Memorial Day Holiday.

Memorial Day Meaning

When you’re enjoying time with family and friends it’s important to remember why we all have a long weekend. Memorial Day is a federal holiday for remembering our armed service members who have sacrificed their own lives while serving in this GREAT country we call home.

American Flag Etiquette

If you are flying an American Flag, raise it to the top of the staff, then solemnly lower to half-staff position to honor those who gave their lives serving this country.  At noon, their memory is raised by the living, so you are encouraged to raise the flag back to the top of the staff at that time.

Moment of Remembrance

At 3:00pm the “National Moment of Remembrance” asks that all Americans “voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of Remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to Taps.”

Grill

If you use propane, don’t forget to check the tank and make sure you have enough to last the weekend! If you use charcoal double-check to make sure you have everything necessary to get your grill up and running, including lighter fluid and coals. Swimming really works up an appetite, so be prepared and don’t make your family and friends wait on their food!

Drinks

When spending time by your pool this Memorial Day Weekend be sure to stay hydrated.

Especially if children are participating in your celebration or you are serving adult beverages, having plenty of water around can help everyone feel their best and enjoy the warm weather in optimal conditions.

Atmosphere
